Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  5. 5

    Add Boiling Water

Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth (the batter will be thin).

  6. 6

    Bake the Layers

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Ganache Preparation

  1. 8

    Heat the Cream

In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.

  2. 9

    Melt the Chocolate

Remove from heat and add the semisweet chocolate chips. Let sit for 5 minutes to melt, then stir until smooth.

  3. 10

    Cool the Ganache

Let the ganache cool at room temperature until it thickens slightly, about 30 minutes.

Assembly

  1. 11

    Layer the Cakes

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of chocolate frosting on top.

  2. 12

    Add Ganache

Pour a layer of ganache over the frosting. Repeat this process, layering the second cake on top, until all layers are stacked.

  3. 13

    Top with Whipped Cream

Spread the remaining chocolate frosting on the top layer and decorate with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
