Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dry Rub

In a bowl, combine the brown sugar, paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Mix well to create an even dry rub.

  2. 2

    Apply the Dry Rub

Rub the dry mixture all over the pork shoulder, making sure to cover all surfaces evenly. Wrap the pork in plastic wrap and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Set Up the Cooker

Preheat your slow cooker or oven to 250°F (120°C). If using a slow cooker, ensure it is set to low.

  2. 4

    Add the Pork

Place the marinated pork shoulder into the cooker, fat side up.

  3. 5

    Add Liquid Ingredients

In a separate bowl, mix the apple cider vinegar and water. Pour this mixture over the pork in the cooker. Cover with the lid.

  4. 6

    Cook the Pork

Cook on low for 8-10 hours in a slow cooker or 4-5 hours in an oven until the pork is tender and easily pulls apart with a fork.

  5. 7

    Shred the Pork

Once cooked, remove the pork shoulder from the cooker and let it rest for about 15 minutes. Use two forks to shred the meat into bite-sized pieces.

  6. 8

    Add BBQ Sauce

Mix the shredded pork with BBQ sauce to taste. You can add more or less depending on your preference.

  7. 9

    Serve

Serve the pulled pork on buns, tacos, or on its own with your favorite sides.
