Blooming Onion Ingredients

Method

Blooming Onion Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onion

Peel the outer layers of the colossal onion, then cut off about 1 inch from the top. Place the onion cut-side down and make 12-16 evenly spaced vertical cuts down to the base, ensuring not to cut all the way through. Gently separate the petals to create a blooming effect.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, pour the buttermilk.

  3. 3

    Coat the Onion

Dip the prepared onion into the buttermilk, ensuring all the petals are coated. Then, dredge it in the flour mixture, ensuring it is evenly coated. Repeat the buttermilk and flour coating for extra crunch.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Onion

Carefully lower the coated onion into the hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown. Turn the onion occasionally for even cooking.

  6. 6

    Drain and Serve

Once golden brown, remove the onion from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
