Method

Preparation of Patty

  1. 1

    Form the Patty

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Form into a patty about ¾ inch thick.

  2. 2

    Cook the Patty

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the patty and cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side until a crust forms. Flip the patty and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes for medium doneness.

Caramelizing Onion

  1. 3

    Slice the Onion

While the patty is cooking, slice the onion into thin rings.

  2. 4

    Cook the Onion

In another skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook for about 10-12 minutes, stirring frequently, until they are golden brown and caramelized.

Assembling the Patty Melt

  1. 5

    Add Cheese

Place the Swiss cheese on top of the cooked patty during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.

  2. 6

    Prepare the Bread

Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.

  3. 7

    Grill the Sandwich

In the same skillet used for the patty, place the buttered side of one slice of bread down. Add the patty with melted cheese, top with caramelized onions, and cover with the second slice of bread, buttered side up. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.

Serving

  1. 8

    Slice and Serve

Remove the patty melt from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot. Enjoy!
