For the Country Fried Steak

For the Sandwich

For the Gravy (Optional)

Method

To Prepare the Country Fried Steak

  1. 1

    Tenderize the Steak

Using a meat mallet, pound the beef round steak until it is about 1/2 inch thick. This helps to tenderize the meat.

  2. 2

    Marinate the Steak

Place the tenderized steak into a bowl and pour the buttermilk over it. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or overnight for best results.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Coating

In a shallow dish, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  4. 4

    Coat the Steak

Remove the steak from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge the steak in the flour mixture, ensuring it is fully coated. Set aside.

  5. 5

    Fry the Steak

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, fry the coated steak for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and drain on paper towels.

To Assemble the Sandwich

  1. 6

    Prepare the Buns

Slice the burger buns in half. If desired, toast them lightly on a skillet or grill.

  2. 7

    Layer the Ingredients

Spread mayonnaise on the bottom half of each bun. Place a piece of fried steak on top, followed by lettuce and slices of tomato.

  3. 8

    Finish the Sandwich

Top with the other half of the bun to close the sandwich. Serve immediately.

To Make the Optional Gravy

  1. 9

    Melt the Butter

In the same skillet used for frying the steak, melt the butter over medium heat.

  2. 10

    Make the Roux

Add the flour to the melted butter and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes until it turns golden brown.

  3. 11

    Add the Broth

Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5-7 minutes.

  4. 12

    Season the Gravy

Stir in salt and black pepper to taste. Serve over the Country Fried Steak Sandwich if desired.
