Kidney Beans Preparation

Add the Spices
Stir in the cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and chili powder. Cook for an additional minute to toast the spices.
- 3
Incorporate the Beans and Tomato
If using dried kidney beans, soak them overnight and cook until tender. If using canned kidney beans, drain and rinse them. Add the kidney beans and tomato puree to the pot. Stir well to combine.
- 4
Simmer the Mixture
Pour in the water or vegetable broth and season with salt. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens.
Rice Preparation
- 5
Rinse the Rice
In a separate saucepan, rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch.
- 6
Cook the Rice
Add the rinsed rice, 2 cups of water, and salt to the saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes or until the rice is fluffy and all the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for an additional 5 minutes.
