Barley Preparation
1. Rinse the Barley
Place 1 cup of pearled barley in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear.
2. Cook the Barley
In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed barley with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Let it simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the barley is tender. Drain any excess water and set aside.
3. Roast the Barley
In a dry skillet over medium heat, add the cooked barley. Stir frequently for about 10-15 minutes until the barley is golden brown and has a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and let it cool.
Coffee Brewing
4. Brew the Barley Coffee
In a French press or coffee maker, add 1 cup of the roasted barley and pour in 2 cups of hot water. Let it steep for about 5-10 minutes, depending on how strong you want the flavor.
5. Strain and Serve
If using a French press, press the plunger down to separate the grounds. If using a coffee maker, just pour the brewed barley coffee into cups. Sweeten with your preferred sweetener and add milk or cream if desired. Serve hot.
