Method

Cooking the Sausage

  1. 1

    Cook the Sausage

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the breakfast sausage. Break it apart with a spatula as it cooks, and brown it evenly until fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes.

Making the Gravy

  1. 2

    Add Butter and Flour

Once the sausage is browned, reduce the heat to medium-low and add the butter to the skillet. Allow it to melt, then sprinkle the flour over the sausage. Stir continuously for about 1-2 minutes to cook the flour slightly.

  2. 3

    Pour in the Milk

Gradually add the whole milk to the skillet while stirring continuously. Make sure to incorporate it well to prevent lumps. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 4

    Season the Gravy

Add salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes to the gravy. Stir to combine and adjust seasonings to taste. If the gravy is too thick, you can add a little more milk to reach your desired consistency.

Serving

  1. 5

    Serve Hot

Once the gravy is thick and seasoned, remove it from heat. Serve hot over biscuits, toast, or your favorite breakfast items.
