Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm milk (about 110°F) with the active dry yeast and sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dough Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Mix the ingredients until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Filling Preparation

  1. 5

    Prepare Filling

In a mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, powdered sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and creamy.

Assembly and Baking

  1. 6

    Shape the Danish

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Cut the dough into smaller squares (about 4x4 inches).

  2. 7

    Add Filling

Place a spoonful of the cream cheese filling in the center of each square. Fold the corners of the dough squares over the filling to create a pocket.

  3. 8

    Final Rise

Place the shaped Danish on a lined baking sheet and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

  4. 9

    Preheat Oven

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  5. 10

    Egg Wash and Bake

Brush the tops of the Danish with the egg wash and sprinkle with sliced almonds. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

  6. 11

    Cool and Dust

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Dust the tops with powdered sugar before serving.
