For the Patty Melt

For the Caramelized Onions

Method

Prepare the Caramelized Onions

  1. 1

    Slice the Onion

Peel and slice the large onion into thin rings.

  2. 2

    Cook the Onions

In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20-25 minutes until the onions are golden brown and caramelized.

Prepare the Patty Melt

  1. 3

    Form the Patties

While the onions are caramelizing, divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and form them into patties, roughly the size of the slices of rye bread.

  2. 4

    Cook the Patties

In the same skillet used for the onions (after removing the onions), cook the patties over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.

  3. 5

    Assemble the Patty Melt

On two slices of rye bread, place a slice of Swiss cheese, followed by a cooked patty, and then a generous portion of the caramelized onions. Top with another slice of Swiss cheese and finish with the remaining slices of rye bread.

  4. 6

    Grill the Sandwich

In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Place the assembled sandwich in the skillet and grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. Repeat with the remaining sandwiches.
