Preparation
- 1
Make the Base
In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, sugar, and a pinch of salt. If making Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, split the vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape the seeds into the mixture, adding the pod as well. For Kona Coffee Ice Cream, add the brewed Kona coffee at this stage.
- 2
Heat the Mixture
Heat the mixture over medium heat until it is hot but not boiling, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.

- 5
Thicken the Base
Cook the mixture over low heat, stirring constantly until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5-10 minutes.
- 6
Chill the Base
Remove from heat and strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean bowl. Discard the vanilla pod (if used). Let it cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate until completely chilled, preferably overnight.
- 7
Churn the Ice Cream
Once chilled, pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.
- 8
Freeze the Ice Cream
Transfer the churned ice cream to an airtight container and freeze for at least 4 hours or until firm.
- 9
Serve
Scoop the ice cream into bowls and enjoy!
