Toppings and Assembly

Method

Patty Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Black Beans

In a mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until mostly smooth but still slightly chunky.

  2. 2

    Combine Ingredients

Add the cooked rice, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, cilantro, cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper, and the egg (or flax egg) to the mashed beans. Mix until well combined.

  3. 3

    Add Breadcrumbs

Gradually mix in the breadcrumbs until the mixture holds together but is not too dry.

  4. 4

    Form Patties

Shape the mixture into 2 equal patties, approximately 1 inch thick.

  5. 5

    Chill Patties

Refrigerate the patties for at least 30 minutes to firm up.

Cooking the Patties

  1. 6

    Heat a Pan

In a skillet, heat a small amount of oil over medium heat.

  2. 7

    Cook Patties

Once the oil is hot, place the patties in the pan. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and heated through.

Assembling the Burger

  1. 8

    Prepare the Bun

Lightly toast the burger buns in the same skillet after removing the patties.

  2. 9

    Layer Ingredients

Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by a cooked patty, sliced tomato, and your choice of ketchup and mustard.

  3. 10

    Serve

Top with the other half of the bun, serve immediately, and enjoy your homemade veggie burger!
