Tamale Ingredients

Method

Tamale Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare Corn Husks

Soak corn husks in warm water for about 30 minutes to soften them. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Dough

In a large bowl, mix corn masa harina with beef broth and vegetable oil until a soft dough forms. Set aside.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Filling

In a skillet over medium heat, cook chopped onion until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic, ground beef, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Cook until beef is browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat and set the filling aside.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Tamales

Take a soaked corn husk and spread about 2 tablespoons of the masa dough in the center. Add about 1 tablespoon of the beef mixture and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Fold the sides of the husk over the filling and roll up tightly. Repeat with remaining husks, masa, and filling.

  5. 5

    Steam the Tamales

Place the tamales upright in a steamer basket. Cover with a wet cloth and steam for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the masa is firm and cooked through.

  6. 6

    Serve

Remove tamales from the steamer and let them cool slightly. Serve topped with enchilada sauce and extra cheese if desired.
