Instructions for Preparing Tostones
- 1
Prepare the Plantains
Peel the green plantains by cutting off the ends and slicing the skin lengthwise. Remove the skin and cut the plantains into 1-inch thick slices.
- 2
First Fry
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the plantain slices in batches. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until they are golden and slightly soft. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- 3
Smash the Plantains
Using the bottom of a flat plate or a tostonera, gently flatten each fried plantain slice to about half an inch thick.
- 4
Second Fry
Return the flattened plantains to the hot oil and fry for an additional 2-3 minutes or until they are crispy and golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- 5
Season and Serve
Sprinkle the hot tostones with salt and garlic powder. Serve with lime wedges on the side for squeezing over the top.
