Jibarito Ingredients
Jibarito Preparation Steps
1. Prepare the Plantains
Peel the green plantains and cut them into halves or quarters, depending on their size. Soak them in salted water for about 30 minutes to help soften them.
2. Fry the Plantains
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the plantains until they are golden brown and tender, about 4-5 minutes on each side. Remove from the skillet and drain on paper towels.
3. Flatten the Plantains
Using a flat surface, gently flatten each fried plantain piece with a plate or the bottom of a pan to create a patty shape.
4. Cook the Steak
Season the steak with salt and black pepper. Cook it in the same skillet over medium-high heat for about 5-7 minutes on each side or until desired doneness. Let it rest before slicing.
5. Assemble the Jibarito
Spread mayonnaise on the flattened plantains. Layer with sliced steak, Swiss cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Top with another flattened plantain. Press down gently.
6. Final Toast
Return the assembled jibarito to the skillet and toast on both sides until the cheese melts and the plantains are crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
7. Serve
Slice the jibarito in half and serve immediately with your choice of side.
