Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Whisk them together until well mixed.

  2. 2

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and gradually mix in the warm water until a soft dough forms. You may need to add a little more water if the dough is too dry.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat 4 cups of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C). You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small piece of dough into it; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.

  2. 5

    Roll Out the Dough

On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into squares or triangles, approximately 2 inches in size.

  3. 6

    Fry the Sopapillas

Carefully place the dough pieces into the hot oil, a few at a time. Fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they puff up and turn golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Serving

  1. 7

    Serve

Serve the sopapillas warm, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar to taste.
