Method
Flan Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Flan Base
In a mixing bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and granulated sugar. Blend until smooth and well-combined.
- 2
Set the Flan Mixture Aside
Once the mixture is smooth, set it aside while you prepare the caramel.
Caramel Preparation
- 3
Make the Caramel
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar and water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves.
- 4
Cook the Caramel
Increase the heat to medium-high and allow the mixture to boil without stirring. Watch closely as it turns to a golden brown color. Remove from heat immediately to prevent burning.
- 5
Coat the Flan Mold
Quickly pour the caramel into a flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly before it hardens.
Baking the Flan
- 6
Pour the Flan Mixture
Once the caramel has set, pour the flan mixture over the caramel in the mold.
- 7
Bake the Flan
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan mold in a larger baking dish and fill the outer dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 8
Cool the Flan
Remove from the oven and let it cool at room temperature. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.
Whipped Cream Preparation
- 9
Make the Whipped Cream
In a mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip until soft peaks form.
Serving
- 10
Serve the Flan
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it, then invert onto a serving plate. Drizzle the caramel sauce on top and serve with a dollop of fresh whipped cream.
