Caramel Preparation

Make the Caramel
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.

Cook the Caramel
Allow the mixture to boil without stirring until it turns a golden amber color. This should take about 8-10 minutes. Be careful not to let it burn.

Pour Caramel into Mold
Quickly pour the caramel into a round flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

Combine with Caramel
Pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the mold or ramekins.
Baking

Bake the Flan
Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool and Refrigerate
Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool at room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
Serving

Unmold the Flan
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Invert onto a serving plate and let the caramel flow over the top.
