Method
Pasta Preparation
Boil Water
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Cook Pasta
Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes.
Drain Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta and set aside.
Cheese Sauce Preparation
Make Roux
Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes to create a roux, stirring constantly.
Add Milk
Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
Combine and Bake
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Combine Pasta and Sauce
In a large mixing bowl, combine the drained pasta with the cheese sauce, stirring well to coat all the pasta.
Prepare Topping
If using, mix breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese in a small bowl, then sprinkle over the mac and cheese mixture.
Transfer to Baking Dish
Transfer the mac and cheese mixture into a greased baking dish.
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is golden and crispy.
Serve
Remove from the oven, let it cool slightly, then serve warm.
