Preparation Steps
1. Prepare the Sushi Rice
Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rinsed rice and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes or until all water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for an additional 10 minutes.
2. Season the Rice
In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Fluff the cooked sushi rice with a fork and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
3. Prepare the Salmon
Thinly slice the fresh salmon fillet. In a bowl, marinate the slices in soy sauce and sesame oil for 10 minutes.
4. Prepare the Vegetables
Chop the green onions and slice the avocado into thin strips.
5. Assemble the Sushi Press
Line the bottom and sides of a sushi press with a sheet of nori. Use wet hands to spread an even layer of sushi rice across the nori, pressing it firmly down.
6. Layer the Ingredients
On top of the rice, layer the marinated salmon, green onions, and avocado slices. Add more sushi rice on top to cover the layers completely. Press down firmly using the lid of the sushi press.
7. Shape the Sushi
Let the sushi sit in the press for 5-10 minutes to set. Carefully remove the sushi from the press and slice into bite-sized pieces.
8. Serve
Arrange the slices on a plate and serve with pickled ginger and wasabi on the side.
