Method

Pie Crust

  1. 1

    Make the Pie Crust

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the unsalted butter with a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. 2

    Add Ice Water

Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Avoid overworking the dough.

  3. 3

    Chill the Dough

Divide the dough into two equal parts, shape each into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

  4. 4

    Roll the Dough

After chilling, roll out one disk on a floured surface to fit your pie pan. Place the rolled dough in the pie pan and trim the edges.

  5. 5

    Prepare the Top Crust

Roll out the second disk of dough for the top crust and set aside.

Apple Filling

  1. 6

    Prepare the Apples

Peel, core, and slice the apples. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour.

  2. 7

    Fill the Pie

Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter.

  3. 8

    Cover with Top Crust

Place the top crust over the filling. Seal the edges by crimping with a fork or your fingers. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.

  4. 9

    Bake the Pie

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 30-35 minutes, until the apples are soft and the crust is golden brown.

Serving

  1. 10

    Serve with Ice Cream

Allow the pie to cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing. Serve each slice warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.
