Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Soak the Saffron

In a small bowl, soak the saffron threads in 2 tablespoons of warm water for about 10 minutes to release their flavor and color.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Rice

Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. This helps to prevent the rice from becoming sticky.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Sauté the Aromatics

In a medium saucepan, heat the butter or olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

  2. 4

    Add Rice and Water

Stir the rinsed basmati rice into the saucepan with the sautéed onions and garlic. Pour in the 2 cups of water and add the soaked saffron along with its soaking water. Add the salt and stir to combine.

  3. 5

    Cook the Rice

Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.

  4. 6

    Add Peas and Fluff

After 15 minutes, remove the saucepan from heat but keep it covered for another 5 minutes. Then, add the peas and gently fluff the rice with a fork to incorporate them evenly. Adjust seasoning if necessary.

  5. 7

    Garnish and Serve

Transfer the saffron rice to a serving dish, garnish with chopped cilantro, and serve warm as a delightful side dish.
