Country Fried Steak

Method

Preparation and Cooking

  1. 1

    Prepare the Steak

Tenderize the beef round steak using a meat mallet. Cut into serving-sized pieces.

  2. 2

    Bread the Steak

In a bowl, combine buttermilk and eggs. In another bowl, mix flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Dip each steak piece into the buttermilk mixture, then dredge in the flour mixture until fully coated.

  3. 3

    Fry the Steak

In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add breaded steak pieces into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove from skillet and drain on paper towels.

  4. 4

    Make the Gravy

In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium. Add 0.5 cups of flour to the remaining oil and whisk to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned. Gradually whisk in milk and bring to a simmer until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.

  5. 5

    Serve

Serve the country fried steak hot, smothered in sawmill gravy.
