Okra

Method

Okra Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Okra

Wash the fresh okra under cold water and trim the ends. Cut the okra into 1/2-inch slices.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Breading

In a large bowl, mix together the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Wet Mixture

In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk until well combined.

  4. 4

    Coat the Okra

Dip the sliced okra into the wet mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then coat them in the dry cornmeal mixture. Make sure the okra is evenly coated.

Frying the Okra

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 6

    Fry the Okra

Carefully add the coated okra slices to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  3. 7

    Drain

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried okra from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Alabama White Sauce Preparation

  1. 8

    Mix the Sauce

In a medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Whisk until smooth and well combined.

  2. 9

    Serve

Serve the fried okra hot, drizzled with Alabama white sauce or on the side for dipping.
