Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt until well combined.

  2. 2

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, mix the warm water (110°F), milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  3. 3

    Make the Dough

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Shaping and Frying

  1. 5

    Shape the Donuts

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters to cut out donuts and donut holes.

  2. 6

    Second Rise

Place the shaped donuts on a floured baking sheet, cover them with a towel, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

  3. 7

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is at the correct temperature.

  4. 8

    Fry the Donuts

Carefully drop the donuts into the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain.

  5. 9

    Coat with Sugar

While the donuts are still warm, toss them in a bowl of powdered sugar, and if desired, add cinnamon for extra flavor.
