Base Ingredients

Optional Mix-ins

Method

Preparation of Base

  1. 1

    Combine Ingredients

In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Whisk together until well combined and the cocoa powder is fully dissolved.

  2. 2

    Heat the Mixture

Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir the mixture continuously until it begins to steam and small bubbles form around the edges, but do not let it boil.

  3. 3

    Cool the Mixture

Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer it to the refrigerator and chill for at least 2 hours, or until completely cold.

Churning and Freezing

  1. 4

    Churn the Ice Cream

Once the mixture is thoroughly chilled, pour it into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.

  2. 5

    Add Optional Mix-ins

If using, add chocolate chips or chopped nuts during the last 5 minutes of churning to incorporate them into the ice cream.

  3. 6

    Freeze the Ice Cream

Transfer the churned ice cream to an airtight container. Smooth the top with a spatula and seal tightly. Freeze for at least 4 hours or until firm.
