Meatballs and Gravy

Method

Preparation and Cooking

  1. 1

    Prepare the Meatballs

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, minced garlic, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until combined.

  2. 2

    Form the Meatballs

Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter. Set aside.

  3. 3

    Brown the Sausage and Braciole

In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add Italian sausage links and brown on all sides. Remove and set aside. In the same pot, add the braciole and brown on both sides.

  4. 4

    Brown the Meatballs

In the same pot, add the meatballs and brown them on all sides. Remove and set aside.

  5. 5

    Make the Gravy

In the pot, add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, bay leaves, oregano, basil, sugar, and salt to taste. Stir well to combine.

  6. 6

    Simmer

Return the sausage, braciole, and meatballs to the pot. Bring to a simmer, cover, and let cook on low heat for at least 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

  7. 7

    Serve

Remove bay leaves before serving. Serve the Sunday gravy over pasta or crusty bread.
