Base Preparation
- 1
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it's hot when you bake the cake.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- 3
Combine Wet Ingredients
In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- 4
Combine Mixtures
Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.
- 5
Bake the Cake
Pour the batter into a greased 9x13 inch baking pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool completely.
Filling Preparation
- 6
Heat Cream
In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over low heat until it's just simmering. Do not boil.
- 7
Melt Chocolate
Remove the cream from heat and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Stir until smooth and fully melted.
- 8
Mix in Sugar and Cream Cheese
In a mixing bowl, combine the melted chocolate mixture, powdered sugar, and cream cheese. Beat until smooth and creamy.
- 9
Fill the Cake
Once the cake has cooled, cut it in half horizontally. Spread the filling evenly over the bottom half, then place the top half back on.
Topping Preparation
- 10
Prepare Whipped Cream
In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. You can add a little powdered sugar for sweetness if desired.
- 11
Top the Cake
Spread the whipped cream evenly over the top of the cake. Sprinkle chocolate shavings and fresh berries on top for garnish.
- 12
Serve
Slice the cake into squares and serve immediately, or refrigerate until ready to serve.
