Potatoes

Butter and Cream

Gravy (optional)

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peel and Cut Potatoes

Peel the Russet potatoes and cut them into equal-sized chunks, about 1-2 inches in size.

  2. 2

    Boil Potatoes

Place the cut potatoes into a large pot and cover with cold water. Add 1 tablespoon of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium heat and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.

Mashing

  1. 3

    Drain Potatoes

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them in a colander and let them sit for a couple of minutes to allow excess moisture to evaporate.

  2. 4

    Mash Potatoes

Return the potatoes to the pot or a large mixing bowl. Add 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter and 1 cup of heavy cream. Use a potato masher or a hand mixer to mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy.

  3. 5

    Season

Stir in 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and adjust the salt to taste. If using, finely chop 2 tablespoons of chives and fold them into the mashed potatoes.

Serving

  1. 6

    Serve

Spoon the mashed potatoes into a serving dish. If desired, pour 2 cups of brown gravy over the mashed potatoes before serving.
