Meat & Marinade

Gravy

Method

Marinating the Steak

  1. 1

    Prepare the Marinade

In a mixing bowl, combine buttermilk and hot sauce. Mix well.

  2. 2

    Marinate the Steak

Place the beef round steak in the marinade, ensuring it is fully submerged. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for best flavor.

Breading the Steak

  1. 3

    Prepare the Breading Mixture

In a shallow dish, combine flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix thoroughly.

  2. 4

    Bread the Steak

Remove the steak from the marinade and allow excess buttermilk to drip off. Dredge the steak in the breading mixture, pressing gently to adhere. Place on a plate and repeat with remaining steaks.

Frying the Steak

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.

  2. 6

    Fry the Steak

Carefully place the breaded steak in the hot oil. Fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and drain on paper towels.

Making the Gravy

  1. 7

    Prepare the Roux

In the same skillet used to fry the steak, reduce heat to medium and melt butter. Once melted, whisk in flour and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.

  2. 8

    Make the Gravy

Gradually add milk while whisking to prevent lumps. Cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Serving

  1. 9

    Plate the Dish

Place the fried steak on a plate and generously pour the gravy over the top. Serve hot with sides of your choice.
