Preparing the Mozzarella Fritta
1. Prepare the cheese
Cut the fresh mozzarella into thick slices, about 1/2 inch each.
2. Set up breading station
In one bowl, place the all-purpose flour. In a second bowl, beat the egg. In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs mixed with salt and black pepper.
3. Bread the mozzarella
Dredge each slice of mozzarella in flour, then dip into the egg, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
Making the Pomodoro Sauce
5. Sauté garlic
In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.
6. Add tomatoes
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, salt, and black pepper. Let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
7. Finish with basil
Add the chopped fresh basil to the sauce and stir well. Remove from heat.
Serving
8. Plate the dish
Serve the fried mozzarella on a plate, drizzled with the pomodoro sauce and garnished with additional fresh basil if desired.
