For the Baklava

Method

Preparing the Filling

  1. 1

    Chop the Nuts

In a food processor, pulse the walnuts until they are finely chopped. Be careful not to grind them into a paste.

  2. 2

    Mix Filling Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.

Assembling the Baklava

  1. 3

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 4

    Prepare Phyllo Dough

Unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out. Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan.

  3. 5

    Layering Phyllo Dough

Take one sheet of phyllo dough and brush lightly with melted butter. Repeat this process, layering 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.

  4. 6

    Add Filling

Sprinkle a portion of the walnut mixture over the layered phyllo. Fold the sides of the phyllo over the filling and roll it up tightly into a log shape.

  5. 7

    Cut into Triangles

With a sharp knife, cut the rolled baklava into triangle shapes (about 1.5 inches wide). Repeat the layering and filling process until all ingredients are used.

Baking and Syrup

  1. 8

    Bake the Baklava

Place the baklava triangles on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown.

  2. 9

    Prepare the Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

  3. 10

    Drizzle Syrup

Once the baklava is out of the oven, immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava, ensuring each piece is well soaked.

  4. 11

    Cool and Serve

Let the baklava cool completely before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
