Fried Green Tomatoes

Method

Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Prepare the Tomatoes

Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices. Sprinkle with salt and let them sit for about 10 minutes to draw out moisture.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Breading

In one bowl, place the all-purpose flour. In a second bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a third bowl, combine the cornmeal, salt, and black pepper.

  3. 3

    Bread the Tomatoes

Dredge each tomato slice in flour, dip in buttermilk, and then coat with the cornmeal mixture. Set aside.

  4. 4

    Fry the Tomatoes

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, fry the breaded tomato slices in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.

  5. 5

    Prepare the Ricotta Mousse

In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, heavy cream, and chopped fresh basil. Blend until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  6. 6

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a separate skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add mixed vegetables and sauté until tender, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

  7. 7

    Serve

On a plate, arrange the fried green tomatoes, top with sautéed vegetables, and dollop with ricotta mousse.
