Method
Preparation
Soak Fava Beans
Soak the fava beans in water overnight or for at least 8 hours to soften.
Cook Fava Beans
After soaking, drain the beans and place them in a pot with enough water to cover them. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 30-40 minutes or until the beans are tender.
Prepare Garlic and Pepper
While the beans are cooking, peel the garlic cloves and chop them finely. Remove the seeds from the hot pepper and chop it finely to your desired spice level.
Mixing and Serving
Mash the Beans
Once the fava beans are cooked and tender, drain any excess water. In a mixing bowl, mash the beans using a fork or a potato masher until smooth or to your desired consistency.
Taste and Adjust
Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or lemon juice to your liking.
Serve
Transfer the foul to a serving dish. Garnish with chopped parsley and tomatoes if using. Serve warm with pita bread on the side.
