Method

Hummus Base

1

Prepare the Chickpeas

Drain and rinse the canned chickpeas under cold water to remove excess sodium.

2

Blend the Ingredients

In a food processor, combine the drained chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, minced garlic, olive oil, ground cumin, salt, and water. Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides as necessary.

3

Adjust Consistency

If the hummus is too thick, add a little more water, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.

Jalapeno Pesto

4

Prepare the Jalapeno

Remove the seeds from the fresh jalapeno for less heat, if desired. Chop it coarsely.

5

Blend the Pesto

In a food processor, combine the chopped jalapeno, fresh basil leaves, pine nuts, olive oil, salt, and lemon juice. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust salt and lemon juice as needed.

Garnish

6

Assemble the Hummus

Spread the hummus on a serving plate or bowl, create a shallow well in the center.

7

Add Pesto and Garnish

Drizzle the jalapeno pesto into the well, then drizzle extra virgin olive oil around the hummus. Sprinkle with sumac for garnish.
