Method

Prepare the Pickles

  1. 1

    Drain and Slice

Drain the dill pickles and pat them dry with paper towels. Slice them into 1/4-inch thick chips.

Make the Batter

  1. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Whisk until well combined.

  2. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter should be thick but smooth.

Fry the Pickles

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles, it’s ready.

  2. 5

    Coat and Fry

Dip each pickle slice into the batter, allowing the excess to drip off. Carefully place the battered pickles into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

  3. 6

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried pickle chips from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot, with ranch dressing on the side if desired.
