Cake Base Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup of unsalted butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add in 4 large eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

  3. 3

    Incorporate Dry Ingredients

In a separate bowl, mix together 2 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 tsp of baking powder. Gradually add the dry mixture into the wet mixture, alternating with 1 cup of milk. Stir in 2 tsp of vanilla extract.

  4. 4

    Bake the Cake

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  5. 5

    Cool the Cake

Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Buttercream Frosting Preparation

  1. 6

    Make the Frosting

In a mixing bowl, beat 1 cup of unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add in 4 cups of powdered sugar, beating until smooth. Mix in 1 tsp of vanilla extract and 2 tbs of heavy cream until you reach a fluffy consistency.

Assembling and Decorating Petit Fours

  1. 7

    Cut the Cake

Once the cake is completely cooled, cut it into small rectangular or square pieces, about 1x2 inches in size.

  2. 8

    Frost the Cake Pieces

Using a spatula, spread a layer of buttercream frosting on top of each cake piece. Allow the frosting to set for about 30 minutes.

  3. 9

    Roll Out the Fondant

Dust a clean surface with powdered sugar and roll out 1 lb of rolled fondant to about 1/8 inch thickness. If desired, add food coloring to the fondant to achieve the desired color.

  4. 10

    Cover the Cake Pieces

Cut out fondant pieces large enough to cover each frosted cake piece. Drape the fondant over the cake and gently smooth out any wrinkles.

  5. 11

    Decorate the Petit Fours

Sprinkle edible glitter and sprinkles on top of each petit four for decoration. Allow the fondant to set for at least 1 hour before serving.
