Preparation Steps
Cook the Pasta
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Prepare the Cheese Mixture
In a large bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, and half of the Parmesan cheese. Mix until well combined.
Combine Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked penne pasta, marinara sauce, and the ricotta cheese mixture. Stir in the chopped fresh basil.
Assemble the Dish
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a greased baking dish, layer half of the pasta mixture, half of the mozzarella cheese, and half of the remaining Parmesan cheese. Repeat with the remaining pasta, mozzarella, and Parmesan.
Bake
Drizzle the top with olive oil. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
Serve
Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired.
