Cook the Mixture
Continue to cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon (about 5-7 minutes). Do not boil.
- 5
Cool and Chill
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Transfer to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate until completely chilled (about 2 hours).
Flavoring the Ice Cream
- 6
Create the Pistachio Flavor
Once the base is chilled, divide the mixture into three bowls. In the first bowl, stir in the chopped pistachios and green food coloring.
- 7
Create the Cherry Flavor
In the second bowl, stir in the chopped maraschino cherries and almond extract.
- 8
Create the Chocolate Flavor
In the third bowl, stir in the cocoa powder.
Freezing the Ice Cream
- 9
Layer the Flavors
Begin layering the flavors in a loaf pan. Start with the pistachio mixture, then add the cherry mixture, and finally the chocolate mixture. Repeat the layers until all mixtures are used.
- 10
Freeze
Cover the loaf pan with plastic wrap and freeze for at least 4 hours or until the ice cream is firm.
