Preparation

Preparation of Rice

1. Rinse the Rice

In a fine-mesh sieve, rinse the basmati rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch and prevent the rice from becoming sticky.

2. Soak the Rice

Transfer the rinsed rice to a bowl and cover it with water. Let it soak for at least 30 minutes to allow the grains to absorb water and cook evenly.

Cooking the Rice

3. Prepare the Cooking Liquid

In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups of water, 1 tsp of turmeric powder, and 1 tsp of salt. Stir to mix well.

4. Heat Oil or Ghee

In a separate pot, heat 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee over medium heat. If using, add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent and golden brown.

5. Add Rice to Pot

Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot with the sautéed onion (if using). Stir gently to coat the rice with the oil or ghee.

6. Combine and Cook

Pour the prepared cooking liquid into the pot with the rice. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the liquid has been absorbed.

7. Fluff and Serve

Once cooked, remove the pot from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Then, fluff the rice gently with a fork. If desired, stir in sliced almonds, cashews, and raisins. Garnish with chopped cilantro or parsley before serving.
