Making the Vanilla Custard
1. Prepare the Custard Base
In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, and granulated sugar over medium heat. Stir until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is warm, but not boiling.
2. Mix Egg Yolks
In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks and cornstarch until well combined. Gradually add a small amount of the warm milk mixture to the egg yolks to temper them, then whisk it back into the saucepan.
3. Cook the Custard
Continue to cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
4. Add Vanilla
Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the custard cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled.
