Fried Calamari
Method
Preparation and Cooking
- 1
Prepare the Calamari
Rinse the cleaned calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. Set aside.
- 2
Make the Breading
In a bowl, mix together the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder.
- 3
Soak in Buttermilk
Place the calamari rings in a separate bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Let them soak for about 15 minutes.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Coat the Calamari
Remove the calamari from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge them in the flour mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated.
- 6
Fry the Calamari
Carefully place the coated calamari rings into the hot oil, frying them in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
- 7
Drain and Serve
Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried calamari from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with spicy tomato sauce and lemon wedges on the side.
