1. Prepare the Onions

Peel the Spanish onions and slice them into thick rings, about 1/2 inch wide. Separate the rings and set aside.

2. Make the Batter

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Gradually add water to the dry ingredients and mix until you have a smooth batter.

3. Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

4. Coat the Onions

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring they are well-coated. Let any excess batter drip off.
