Calamari

Spicy Marinara Sauce

Method

Preparing the Calamari

  1. 1

    Prepare the Squid

If not already cleaned, clean the squid by removing the head, innards, and cartilage. Cut the body into rings.

  2. 2

    Mix the Coating

In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Coat the Calamari

Dredge the squid rings in the flour mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated. Shake off any excess flour.

Frying the Calamari

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or fryer, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).

  2. 5

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the calamari rings to the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  3. 6

    Serve

Serve the fried calamari hot with spicy marinara sauce on the side.

Preparing the Spicy Marinara Sauce

  1. 7

    Sauté the Garlic

In a saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  2. 8

    Add Tomatoes and Spices

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, red pepper flakes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.

  3. 9

    Finish the Sauce

Let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Before serving, stir in the chopped fresh basil.
