Toppings

Method

Prepare the Patty

  1. 1

    Mash Chickpeas

In a large mixing bowl, mash the cooked chickpeas with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

Add the grated carrot, finely chopped bell pepper, onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, ground cumin, salt, black pepper, olive oil, and egg (or flax egg) to the mashed chickpeas. Mix until all the ingredients are well incorporated.

  3. 3

    Form Patties

Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 1/2 inch thick.

  4. 4

    Chill Patties

Place the formed patties in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to help them firm up.

Cook the Patty

  1. 5

    Preheat Grill

Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium heat.

  2. 6

    Grill Patties

Brush the grill with a little olive oil to prevent sticking. Place the chilled patties on the grill and cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and heated through.

Assemble the Burger

  1. 7

    Prepare Buns

While the patties are grilling, lightly toast the whole grain burger buns on the grill for 1-2 minutes until they are warm and slightly crispy.

  2. 8

    Add Toppings

On the bottom half of each bun, layer the lettuce leaves, grilled veggie patty, sliced tomato, red onion, avocado, and any desired condiments like ketchup and mustard.

  3. 9

    Serve

Place the top half of the bun on the assembled burger and serve immediately with your favorite side dishes.
