Cake and Filling

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Bake the Chocolate Cake

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.

  3. 3

Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.

  4. 4

Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour evenly into prepared pans.

  5. 5

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.

  6. 6

    Prepare the Filling and Frosting

In a mixing bowl, whip heavy cream until it begins to thicken.

  7. 7

Add powdered sugar and continue to whip until stiff peaks form.

  8. 8

    Assemble the Cake

Once cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread half of the cherry pie filling over the cake layer.

  9. 9

Spread a layer of whipped cream over the cherry filling.

  10. 10

Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the process with the remaining cherry filling and whipped cream.

  11. 11

    Decorate

Top the cake with remaining whipped cream. Garnish with chocolate shavings or sprinkles and maraschino cherries.
