Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water (1.5 cups) and sugar (2 tbs). Stir in active dry yeast (2 tsp) and let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour (4 cups) and salt (1 tsp). Make a well in the center, then pour in the activated yeast mixture and vegetable oil (2 tbs).

  3. 3

    Knead Dough

Mix until the dough comes together. Knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Let Dough Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Filling Preparation

  1. 5

    Combine Filling Ingredients

In a bowl, mix ground pork (1 lb), soy sauce (2 tbs), sesame oil (1 tbs), minced ginger (1 tbs), minced garlic (2 cloves), chopped green onions (3 stalks), black pepper (1 tsp), sugar (1 tsp), and Chinese five-spice powder (1 tsp).

  2. 6

    Mix Well

Use your hands or a spoon to thoroughly combine all the filling ingredients. Make sure the mixture is evenly combined.

Assembly and Cooking

  1. 7

    Shape the Buns

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small balls (about 2 ounces each). Flatten each ball into a circle, about 4 inches in diameter.

  2. 8

    Add Filling

Place a tablespoon of the pork filling in the center of each circle. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together to seal the bun.

  3. 9

    Steam Buns

Place the buns on a parchment-lined steamer basket, leaving space between them. Steam over boiling water for about 15-20 minutes until cooked through.

  4. 10

    Serve

Remove the buns from the steamer and serve warm. Enjoy your wild appetizers with unique flavors!
