Preparation

  1. 1

    Chop Vegetables

Finely chop the onion, garlic, carrot, and celery.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Sauté Vegetables

In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, carrot, and celery. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 3

    Brown the Meat

Add the ground beef and ground pork to the pot. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, about 8-10 minutes.

  3. 4

    Add Tomato Products

Stir in the canned tomatoes, tomato paste, and beef broth. Bring to a simmer.

  4. 5

    Season the Sauce

Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and bay leaf. Stir to combine.

  5. 6

    Simmer

Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  6. 7

    Adjust Seasoning

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with more salt, pepper, or red pepper flakes if desired.

  7. 8

    Serve

Remove the bay leaf before serving. Serve over your favorite pasta or use in lasagna.
