Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally and season with a pinch of salt.

  2. 2

    Form the Patties

In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form the beef into two equal patties, about 1/2 inch thick.

  3. 3

    Cook the Patties

In the same skillet used for the onions, add another tablespoon of butter and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place the American and Swiss cheese on top of each patty to melt.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of butter and place two slices of caraway rye bread in the skillet. Top each slice with a melted patty, followed by the sautéed onions and then the other two slices of bread. Cook until the bread is golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side, adding more butter as needed.

  5. 5

    Serve

Once the sandwiches are golden brown and the cheese is melted, remove from the skillet. Slice in half and serve immediately.
