Prepare the Tomatoes
Wash the green tomatoes and slice them into 1/4 inch thick slices.

Set Up Breading Station
In one bowl, place the flour mixed with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. In another bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a third bowl, place the cornmeal.

Bread the Tomatoes
Dip each slice of tomato first into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk, and finally coat with cornmeal. Ensure they are well coated.

Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.

Fry the Tomatoes
Fry the breaded tomato slices in batches for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
